I have been in Houston since 1980 and still love it. I live inside the loop on the West side and have never been burglarized or had my car broken into. The cost of living is good, but has increased significantly over the last 5 years. I have a 1 BR/LOFT near the Galleria and pay $1,450/month. You can find it all here....1 BR for $700/month or 1 BR+ for $4,000/month.

That depends on what your expectations are. If u are very outdoorsy, than maybe this is not the best place for you since it does get very hot (90-105) from late may to late october. The rest of the year is very nice and seldom freezes.
LIving expenses are about 50%-100% compared with NW, NE or California coastal areas. Gas and utilities are cheap as well and there is a lot of options for food. Nice Tex-Mex Culture and people from all over the world.
If you are single and want to know how much you can expect to spend on food for 3 weeks, that depends, on whether you eat outside or at home. Nevertheless the cost will only be slightly less than when you spend wherever you are ($250-$400).
Depending on where you rent a 1 bedroom apt, it might cost you from $600 to $1500.

It is hard to let you know what apartments will go for in the Houston area without knowing where in this metroplex you will be moving. But you best bet is living OUTSIDE of the city limits of Houston as much as possible! Here is a link: http://houston.apartments.com/
I also cannot answer about the food thing as I do not know your food preferences......but I can tell you that per month my family of 5 spends about $450 to $500 a month of food and supplies. We have many great grocery stores such as HEB and Fiesta that you can get more for your money at!
If you don't feel like cooking, there are tons of great restaurants to try out.

Great Web Site I found today. Since whether it's "nice" depends on where you're coming from and we don't know that information in this case, the following site compares different areas in the entire country by different demographics and highlights them graphically. So pick the categories that are most important to you and see how Houston stacks up vs. where you are now. It shows the following:
Lifestyle
Politics
Crime
Elem School Rank
Air Quality
Home Price
Apt Rent
Cost of Living
Commute Time
Household Income
Tax Rates
Unemployment
Population Density
White
Hispanic
African American
Asian
American Indian
Check it out...really cool:

Of course, being in Houston now, it's a great place to live and work!!!

I have lived in Houston since 1987. My household consis of me and one other adult no children.
I have not priced apartments in over 10 years and the rental rates are constantly changing. I would not be a very good authority of the price of an apartment. If you are looking to buy a house or condo click here.
www.har.com
That website is the Houston Area Realtors and it list prices of what is for sale by zip code.
Price of of a gallon of gasoline in Houston is usually the highest in Texas. That is because we are the largest city in the state and we have the biggest demand for gasoline. I filled up over the weekend and paid $2.12 per gallon. You may want to compare that to where you currently live. Accroding to the media on average Houston pays less per gallon than the national average.
I don't know if you cook at home or not but if you do it will decrease your food costs. I cook the evening meals on Sundays thru Thursdays. My weekly grocery bill runs between $50.00 and $80.00. Remember that is for 2 people and includes not only food but household items (toothpaste, laundry soap). I work in a hospital and buy my lunch at the cafteria on Monday thru Friday and I keep myself to a budget of $10.00. For those meals. On the weekends I do not cook and we give ourselves a treat and go out to eat. We usaully spend $20.00 to $50.00 per person on these meals but we are not trying to looking for a bargin.

i love houston. there's lots of great food choices- it's the restaurant city.
texas is the best state, lots of travel options just within the state. houston doesn't have lots of nature stuff, but a drive to some neighboring cities, like austin, is a lot of fun.
plenty of living options too. and fairly cheap compared with the rest of the US. from $600-1500 for a single person, like someone else answered.
crime is high but you need to be aware of your surroundings all the time.
the people are warm and friendly (it's Texas!) and it's easy to make friends.
the city is very multi-cultural. food, museums, music, people. i love the place.
you just have to get used to the weather!

All people are different and all of them have different opinions. You won't know the answer unless you come and see it yourself. If you have never tried, let's say an apple, how in the world would you know the taste? It doesn't matter how many different opinion did you have(some said they liked, other said they didn't... sour... sweet...) ... as soon as you tried it ... you have your own opinion...
