The news is so sad and depressing. The fighting. wars, poverty and torture. The bad news nearer to home of (again) poverty, racial tension, muggings, murder. Even the less serious happenings like councils doing their very best to ban Christmas, bit by bit. Fearful of offending our ethnic 'friends' while we are seriously offended by being made to feel like second class citizens in our own country.

The waste of human life through illness or accident, especially the very young, tugs on our heartstrings. Cruelty to animals and abuse of children makes me cry.

We read all this in our newspapers every day and here it on the news, how do we cope with the enormity of it all.? Do we try to do something about a particular problem? Do our actions depend on how aware we are or how socially commited?

Things make me seethe when I read about them but usually it wears off by the close of the day, am I heartless or is it normal?

I feel the same like you and i totally agree with you.
Unfortunately, the role of the media shall not be just reporting, the true and real role is to find solutions, is to build awareness in the public opinion in order to have change.
How long shall we suffer, killings everywhere, torturing, blood, violence... all these terms and many others became something normal to our ears. For example, if we were eating while watching news and suddenly a report was broadcasted reprting the death of tens in an explosion. How would we react? Many will continue to eat, the majority will continue while those who really cares might feel with sadness.
Anyway, if this is the reality, we shall not be affected and sad will bring us nothing. What we must do is to act and do something about it, maybe by a word or even in our hearts.
In fact, the whole world is like the 3 monkies, can't hear nor see or talk.
But we shall prevail.
May things goes better and everyone shall act from his own.
ALL the best for you, i enjoyed reading your opinion, at last something far from depressing.

It's so depressing! When I was younger I would tell everyone that I would read every book in the world because I thought that the only books were the ones that I saw at the store and in my library. Unfortunately (but not so much because I love to read) I found out that there were soooo many more books. Now that I want to be a writer this not only worries me because I want my book to be read but it worries me because there will be so many un read pages and so many untold stories that it saddens me! lol I just finished reading the Kite Runner like 5 minutes ago (which was amazing), now I am moving onto Girl, Interrupted but a book I never got around to reading fully was The Prophecy of the Stones. I got it for a birthday present in 2006 I always start it then I get halfway and just stop! I feel so bad that I never read it because my friend kept asking me about it and she gave up asking I feel soooo bad.

No - I feel like this, too. That's why I don't buy newspapers any more. It's on the web, it's on TV, it's being thrust down our throats 24/7. It's a relief just to be able to get back behind my front door at the end of the day - some people don't make it that far if they've been unlucky enough to meet the wrong person. It IS upsetting, but law & order seems to be the last thing on Blair's agenda.

I can see your point, I'm getting really annoyed with picking up ANY paper and seeing Posh Spice slapped all over the front. But having said tht, it is good to read up about what is going on in the world, if we didn't have that information, we'd not have anything to talk about at the dinner table or down the pub!

know what ya mean, that's why i quit watching the news and reading the paper some time ago. i get up in the mornings and watch the whether and go from there. although i still come across the horrible things in life around us and just try to ignore it or try to forget. nothing we can do about it, get up every morning and hope the sun shines and if it doesn't perhaps it will the next day..have a great day..chaz

If it depresses you that much, then change what you are reading. Get a subscription to Guideposts or a positive outlook type magazine. Or you could opt to not read the paper for a week and see if you feel better.

Yep newspapers and now the news on tv can be all depressing. I only watch my local news now because the national is full of stories about people getting blown up and bombing and getting hurt and killing! It is terrible.

You're not heartless. You're brainless- if you read the papers, you will see that this year they are saying Merry Christmas again.
