In the sport of "professional" wrestling, it's when two wrestlers, compete as a team against two other wrestlers. Only one member of each team is in the ring at a time. A team's wrestlers touch each other's hand or "tag" each other to exchange places. The wrestler outside the ring enters the ring, and his partner leaves the ring. Each team of wrestlers is known as a "tag team."
The term "tag team" is sometime used as a metaphor to describe when two people act as one.

A tag team means having a two man team where one person is involved in whatever activity and the other team member stands by, when the person that is involved switches he "tags" the other team member giving him the indication it is his turn
