Of course there is Bram Stoker's Dracula and then there is the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by L. K. Hamilton. There is also a series by Brian Lumley - The Necroscope series followed by the Vampire World series. Anne Rice is good too. Then the Undead series by Maryjanice Davidson. Also the Darkyn series by Lynn Viehl. I think those will keep you occupied for a wee while for now. Oh yes and I nearly forgot the L A Banks series, the Vampire Huntress Legend and the Tanya Huff Victora Nelson series and the Vampire Earth series by E.E. Knight and, finally, the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. Phew...

Try anything by Charlaine Harris in the Southern Vampire / Sookie Stackhouse Series. These are funny and entertaining as well as dealing with vampires. Unlike L. K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series or Buffy/Angel the eponymous heroine is just a waitress working in a dinner with only a small supernatural gift (she reads minds) hence here delight in meeting 'Bill' her ordinary vampire boyfriend whose mind cannot be read ...

Besides all the books that have been said, Sunshine by Robin McKinley is a good read. The Atwater-Rhodes books are really good.
Also, I recommend watching the movie Underworld. It is one of the best vampire movies I have seen! If you like it you'll want to check out the sequel Underworld: Evolution.

Chelsea Quinn Yarbro has a number of vampire books in a couple of series that are connected and cross over each other. I believe the first book is "Hotel Transylvania".

Try the Dresen Files by Jim Butcher, although it's not strictly a "vampire" series but they do feature heavily and the books are a very entertaining read.

The original, of course, is the best way to go. But check out "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova. It's one of the better books, overall, that I've read in the last couple of years and I liked it much more than any Anne Rice book I've read.

Umm have you heard of Anne Rice? Read the first 3 vampire chronicles and for the sake of tradition read Bram Stoker's classic - it reads like melodrama now but thats half the fun.
