I have just started painting with oil using the 3 basic colors (blue, red, yellow). How can I get the gamut of the rest of the colors and what can I do to achieve lighter or darker tones of a color?

red blue and yellow are the "primary colors" using these you can get any hue of the rainbow you desire. although, in order to get the most range in color you might want to consider using black and white to gain a greater range of value.

red and blue gain purple, the more blue you use the more blue tone there is, the more red the greater red tone in the purple.

yellow and blue gain green

red and yellow get orange.

using these steps you can get a red orange yellow green blue and purple using only 3 primary colors :D
