If somebody is 'facetious', they make amusing remarks, often in a clever or critical way or at inappropriate times.

Example : He was being facetious and his sister got crosser and crosser. Her facetious remarks made her mother angry.

The level of harmlessness in the meaning of facetious is up to interpretation. When I am being facetious, I make a humorous/witty/clever remark that is not to be taken seriously. Examples: Daughter: I decided to clean my room today. Me: Really? You and what army? Girlfriend: Does this dress make my hips look bigger? Me: Only when you wear it. Being facetious is aimed at humor, not criticism.
