I have been reading stories of affairs and they have the same themes. Usually, a man in an affair will tell his mistress that he wants a divorce. He will also tell his wife that he wants one, and tell his family that he is leaving. In the end, the man stays in the marriage. Why would he put his family through such agony by saying that he wants a divorce if he really doesn't?

Probably because he is thinking about the mistress as a possible next wife, but then realizes after being with her for a long amount of time and the newness of the fling wears off he suddenly will realize that he loves his wife and the other woman is just good for sex.
I'm not saying this is right , and if my husband did this that i would accept it (i'd leave his a**). But just stating how a lot of people think.

its a open threat, if he wanted to leave he would, saying that he is going to is just a way to make his wife change or do what he would like her to. change whatever behavior he wants changed.

it rationalizes the cheating in his head.if he is breaking up then it is not cheating in his mind.just trying to mask the guilt. but he is only fooling himself
