im starting to learn how to drive right now and i understand the concept of shiftiing up. the prob is i cant understand the idea of downshifting (decelerating). help....: )

It's just the same as changing up a gear, only you're going the other way. You can tell by the engine note, ie the sound it makes. When you're in too high a gear, it starts getting 'chuggy'.

Well first you need a lot of practice using a manual shift until you get it right. The clutch is used in conjunction with the gas pedal. Now skilled drivers will clutch then downshift while slowing to the 2nd gear speed, this come with experiance

press the clush pedal and shift in the inferior gear. choose the right gear according to the speed. (if u have x km/h and u know u should change into a superior gear, that's the speed u should go down to when decelerating)
every gear has its speed and u change gears accordingly, doesn't matter if up or down

It is no different to shifting up, except you do it when you are decelerating rather than accelerating. You will learn how to know when to do it by your engine sound, but a good guide is that if your car has a rev. counter aim to keep that at about 2000.
