The running cost of electric underfloor heating under wood would be a lot, because wood is like and insulating material and it would not be practical. Underfloor heating should be used under ceramic, quarry, marble or granite tiles, because it takes a while to heat them up, but if they are warm it keeps the heat much longer and the running cost much lower.

Sounds expensive to rip up tiles and then install another floor. I'd be looking for another means of heating in there. However, I have stood on laminate floors with radiant heat under them and they are toasty warm. Tile is cold. I hate the stuff. I have a bathroom that is all tile and if I could afford to re-do it, I would. The funny thing is that our home's assessment value goes up because we have tile vs. laminate and I would be happier with laminate or a Pergo kind of flooring.

I agree with Welshelf. For a conservatory fine, but for regular rooms, not worth half a tinker's damn! And, yes, when they stop working, what a headache to get back to rights. I would much prefer an electric fire if nothing else can be done.

I have installed it on a number of occasions but never recommend it. For how much it costs to purchase and the running cost plus the problems when it goes wrong it is just not worth the hassle

Consider Radiant Cove heaters. More efficient, easy to install, and much less costly. You can put your furniture anywhere.

I put it in our conservatory and it works fine. Got it from screwfix.com (cheapest place I could find it.)
