HDD model# ST9120821A, its working with 40GB Hitachi. both are 5400 RPM

Sounds like a hardware conflict. The DVD and HDD are sharing the same DMA channel or Interrupt so using one breaks the other. Open Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device manager. Delete any link that is yellow or red. Reboot the laptop and let Windows resolve the conflict.

This could be the problem of Master and Slave drive. You should make your HDD as Master and DVD as Slave. If both are Slave or if both are Master then its sometimes difficult for the computer to decide. You mave have the jumper settings on your DVD and HDD. Refer to the manul or on the Disk Drive itself to configure the jumpers correctly.
