Well Symantec (Norton) and McAfee are pretty much the standard in antivirus products. I've worked with both and of the two I think the McAfee product is less of a system hog.

Keep in mind though that these days just having antivirus software is NOT enough. You need antispyware software as well. Webroot's Spysweeper is probably the best out there right now. I've worked with a couple of different products and this one was most effective at detecting spyware. You can get Spysweeper with antivirus software from Sophos (another trusted name in corporate antivirus solutions) at http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/spysweeperwithantivirus/.

If you want to take it a step further get yourself a comprehensive suite of security applications. Antivirus, antispyware and a software firewall. A firewall monitors the network traffic coming in and out of your laptop. This is important because both spyware and viruses can generate recognizable network traffic, so firewalls add another layer of protection. Zone Alarm, from Zone Labs, is a very popular software firewall. It's affective and easy to use.

What do I do? I run Zone Labs Internet Security Suite (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list.jsp;jsessionid=F75g2fgUuq1BU2sL215QdH8fRYyoiPOdbWCFsznzdNR9hoUvOa5J!695628110!-1062696903!7551!7552!NONE?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=dbtopnav_zaav#8 ) and Spysweeper (without the Sophos; http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/spysweeper ).

Whatever you decide, make sure you keep your security software up to date. Antivirus and antispyware software that's not updated regularly is providing a false sense of security and opening your system up to potential attacks.

I have had Avast 4.7 Home Edition running for the past 4 years without any major hick ups, Zone Alarm Firewall is good and SpywareBlaster is remarkably good at preventing add-mail-spyware from getting on your system in the first place, all free to download.

Hiya , i have AVG free edition on both my ant virus and now spyware and cannot praise it high enough -especially for tracking harmful viruses , worms and "vaulting " them: i,m no pc expert but an ex works for IBM and installed the anti virus for me -easy peasy and now i,ve managed myself to install the spyware too;) -when i first bought my pc i paid a fortune for Norton etc and of course my isp anti virus ware ,but found both useless ,especially at the prices!! AVG is completely free though will "try" to get you to upgrade and buy...!!:: as when you install the free version ,you have this for at least a year -100% free:) ..hope this helps and to download just type AVG in your browser and follow the free download steps ...though AVG applies to PC,S i,m not sure though re laptops but "presume" it is the same for both -no harm in trying ...good luck :) :)

I would recommend NOD32.

Integrated Real-Time Protection against viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware, rootkits, phishing, and hackers. Best detection, fastest performance & smallest footprint.

Takes a little getting used to but it`s well worth it.

You can try the 30 day free trial, after which, you either pay for it, or delete it.
