How, When, and Why did the banana become the universal slipping agent in movies?

Buster Keaton may have been the first to use it on film although Fatty Arbuckle used it too. Pretty certain W.C. Fields used it as well. Chaplin definitely used it and in one of the Mac Sennett Keystone Kops flicks, a motorist threw a banana peel onto the ground and the Kops car skidded on it around a corner. All silent movies so the 1920's would be the go!
