The house DOES exist, right there on Ocean Ave., been past it many times, but they have changed the outside appearance because of gawkers. There WERE murders there, that much is true; the DeFeo family got slaughtered by the son, Ronald, but the house is not haunted.

Well, you ask a loaded question there. Really haunted is a matter that is subjective to ones personal belief, and a willingness to either dismiss that which is unexplained as fantasy, or keep an open mind that there may be something to the 'unexplained phenomena that may or may not occur at any location.

It appears that the house does really exist, and there was a violent happening there. There are 'reports' of strange illnesses and other unexpected health events 'caused' by the 'haunted house'.

It is also true that there was a mock up house made for the movies to insure that the special effects were repeatable and gave the desired result.

I am sure that there are people that under no circumstances will believe that any structure is haunted. As I am sure that there are some that will believe it. I believe that those people there experienced something, was it preternatural or not, well i can't say. I do believe in spirits. As to if the structure is actually, measurably haunted. Well, the jury is out.

This is like asking if possession is real. The reality of the Amityville Horror died along with Kathy and George Lutz (Mr. Lutz died this past summer).

The normal answers you will see here are either too silly to be acknowledged or simply, "NO!"

However, keeping in mind that the book and movie were GREATLY embellished...you need to ask yourself why any family would simply leave a house (new groceries in the fridge, dinner on the table, laundry in the dryer, etc.) and simply refuse to return.

If you had ever had the opportunity to speak to George Lutz as many of us did on his website, you would know that he was a very sane, kindhearted man. He wasn't stupid and I don't think that he was given to hallucinations.

Did Amityville happen the way that the movie portrayed it? Of course not. But, did something happen to that family? Yes. Something happened to them that frightened them a great deal. I don't think it was necessarily demonic but houses have energy in them. You move into a house where an entire family was blown away a year prior and you are going to feel bits of what went on in that house.

The current family has lived there without experiencing anything (at least not that they would admit to) but again, you have to ask yourself, is it possible?

There were murders in the house, that is a fact. But about the haunting, I don't know, it is easy to say no ( I did). But then I saw the History Channel (2000) interview, Kathy Lutz was sick (she died in 2004) Until the end they maintained that something did happen in the house while living there. If you are sick and dying would you continue to lie? Don't get me wrong, I believe the people that has lived in the house after the Lutz family ( they all say there is no haunting) but maybe, just maybe, something did happen to the Lutz family

I read a story on this is a serial killer book.

No its not really haunted. There were a few things said about some weird things happening but thats it.

The Lutz?? Family made it all up for like publicity. once they moved out the family that moved in after had no problems.

Ronald Defeo JR (The guy who killed the family) Was a very agressive disturbed man to begin with... and in the picture that was in the book he looked alot like Ryan Reynolds!
He prolly really dont but he did in that picture.

It was an all around good movie and good story... but no its not haunted :)
And yes I think it does still stand today.
