There is a very real danger of an electric shock if your not 100 % certain of what you are doing. The various plugs that come from the PSU normally only fit in their respective sockets on the motherboard. You will need to make sure that power is being delivered to the motherboard. The CPU cooling fan is connected to the mother board as are any case fans and power is connected to any hard drives and CD/DVD drives.
Some of the smaller two pin connectors for power, HDD running lights etc are not normally easily identifiable from the motherboard and you will ned the motherboard manual to say which pins are short or long.
If the power cable is fused and you are careful, you should avoid any unpleasant shocks but could fry the PC big time. Dont put your hands inside the PC unless you are certain the power is completely off. Put both sides on the PC before you try to turn it on.

Of course there is a chance - the powersupply has 240v in. but to get a shock you need to touch something metal with you bare hands.
The power supply also steps down the voltage to 12v or so
Also the powersupply will switch off of it detects a fault in the hardware
So yes there are risks but they can be reduced

this is a tricky one if the power supply is wrong big time shock could kill you if something on the board is wrong mild shock can happen if you think this is a problem get one on the screwdrivers with a neon tester which and this will tell you if it is dangerious however if youve wired somthing wrong it could damage the computer when the power is on

if it went together before then it wont be a problem, but would make sure all the clock speeds ect are set on the mother board incase you fry any parts check dip switches ect...

Voltage doesnt matter its the amps that will kill you and there is not enough amperage in a computer.
EXCEPT in a CRT monitor ...not a good place to go if you dont know what you are doing
