It's the body's own mechanism to assist you from urinating in bed.

A man cannot maintain an erection and urinate at the same time. Therefore, as we sleep, our bladder fills up and we all know the end results is the urge to use the bathroom when we first wake. Maintaining an erection helps men from urinating and allows them the chance to get to the bathroom to relieve the pressure.
