George Orwell's "1984", because the Big Brother IS watching us right now. It's a miraculous prophecy of the world we now live in.

I intended to tell you it's "1984" by George Orwell but it's chosen by the first answerer. Therefore, I turn to "Love in the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez since it's one of the 100 most meaningful books of all time according to a 2002 survey of some 100 well-known authors from 54 countries in a poll organized by editors at the Norwegian Book Clubs in Oslo.
Please visit the website below for more info, I hope there're some titles that might interest you.

I love the Daughter of the Empire trilogy by Janny Wurts. I love the fact there is a strong female lead character who is able to overcome so much and still think of helping others. The Canterbury Tales is also up as a fav. Was disappointed to find out A Knight's Tale the movie was based on one of the tales, and is nothing like it! Typical!!

Stephen King's The Dark Tower series, all seven books as a whole; he takes these characters through a surreal world and there are elements of this story in nearly all of his other stories. I love the way he writes about the horrors of the human mind as well :)

The Urantia Book. It has the answer to every question you could possibly ask about life, the Earth, the universe, and almost every type of being in existence, past and present. Want to know what happens when you die? Read it. Want to know about pre-historic races and societies? It's in the U. Book.

The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway
I think it is a very passionate story but still realistic. It characterizes what a person will do for love even though he/she knows it is in vain. It is also the best prose I have ever read about fishing - I can almost picture myself on the edge of the stream in Spain.

BY Reason of Insanity, by Shane Stevens. The author puts you inside the mind of a serial killer and you feel that you are there in his life. And sometimes I felt I was on the outside looking in. Other times you are him! It kept me captivated and repulsed at the same time. I love thrillers and for anyone to read this must have this interest to appreciate this authors work. Very intense!
