Dying their hair black-doesn't Cortney Cox, Catherine Zeta Jones, Rosie O'Donnell have black hair, and are not they white people? Getting tans-yes a nice golden tan is a white trait too? How's any of that trying to not look white? An extreme minority of women will do strange things to their bodies-that is no indication of a desire of the whole group wanting to look that way. The only group of women I have noticed consistently and on a broad basis trying to look unlike their race is black women--The overwhelming majority straighten their hair with a variety of chemicals in an effort to acquire the hair texture of other races (white or latino or asian).

Women are always trying to be something that they are not. Tanning doesn't mean they want to be black, just tan. Tanning was once thought to be healthy (it's not). Dying your hair a different color means that you don't like your hair color today. Most women want to dye their hair red. Why's that? Perhaps they wear certain clothes to get street cred. Some girls try to talk like they are black or Hispanic, but most don't. White women may be trying to be something that they are not, but I don't think many of them are trying to be something other than white. It's not a racial thing. I just think that there is nothing wrong with being white for society's point of view.

To many problems when this question. The term ethnic means of or pertaining to a group of people recognized as a class on the basis of certain distinctive characteristics such as religion, language, ancestry, culture or national origin.
So white is also ethnic wow imagine that.
I like to tan not because I am trying to imiate a race I tan because I love the way the sun feels on my skin and the fact when your tanned your body tends to stay warmer in the winter. Not to keep up with my sister who has olive toned skin even if it was to keep up with her wouldn't that be me imitating my own race seeing as she is my sister full blooded.
As for the hair color most people are imiating Hollywood. Not any ethic groups. An actress colors her hair dark for a role and decided she likes it. So a trend is set. Has nothing to do with being ethnic or not it has to do with HOLLYWOOD.

Because of basic human nature.

We, as individuals, are rarely happy with our own appearance.

Those with straight hair want curls, those with curls want it straight. You have red hair - you want brown/blonde/black. You have brown hair - you want blonde, and so on.

Your skin is fair - you want dark, your skin is dark, you want fair.

You are short - you want to be tall, you are tall -you want to be short.

You are plump - you want to be thin, you are thin; you want curves.

Need I go on?

P.S. Naughty, naughty, Erik - not just women - there are plenty of men doing the same thing. (The men are just less likely to admit it)

people often want to be what they aren't. loook at japan- historically geishas painting there face white, modern day youth dying their hair blonde and trying to be as western looking as is physically possible. in my experience it is more the other way round!
