My computer sometimes hangs. The serviceman says either there may be problem with HDD or with RAM. Sometimes my computer works fine. I don't see any problem with the RAM. Is there any method to find out the problem. Thanks

There are several software diagnostics you can run on your PC, however, since they too rely on your hardware to run properly they may not always report acurately.

PC troubleshooting is more a matter of "process elimination" than anything else (like most in most all electronic repair).

Any decent technician would replace your ram (even for a day or two let you see if the problem persits. If not then step 2 ... repace the hard drive ( with any used one he may have) & see if the problem persits. Same thing with the power supply & finally if all this fails then indications are that the mainboard has a defective component.

Before any of this I suggest you backup your files & reinstall the OS with no added software of any kind. See if the problem is still there. If so then you know for sure it is a hardware issue & not some rogue software process misbehaving.

(FYI ...any respectable tech should have access to a professional diagnostic program that loads at bootup to test all hardware components accurately .... I suggest you find a new place to get your PC serviced)

If there is a bad sector in your hard disk, you can check typing the following command in the dos mode command.
c:/> type chkdsk. it will show that if there would be any bad sector in your HDD. If there is a problem with the Ram, Your computer won't start and you won't be able to listen a beep during booting of the computer. So,you can plug-out from the CPU and again plug-in the port of ram of the CPU.

Dear! it is not necessary that problem exists only with RAM or HDD. There may be some problem in OS or even POWER SUPPLY.

There are as many possibilities as you can think of.

Check both using another computer.
