God does talk to us THROUGH his inspired word, The Bible.
When that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away. 1 Corinthians 13.
When Jesus came, and died, and rose again, then ascended back to heaven...THAT WHICH IS PERFECT HAD COME.
Now God speaks through his word.

They didn't have looney bins then so they dealt with it by inventing mutually exclusive religions that preach love, yet allow for the destruction of unbelievers.

That is a good question...maybe because our beliefs and our everyday lives are not as intertwined and perhaps we try to find a scientific explanation for everything when there is no explanation for miracles.
