Time to visit Nikko is autum when all the tree leaves turned into yellow and red colors like a beautiful carpet in which a rake Chuzenji shines back the blue sky. I was born in the Tochigi prefecture where this Nikko city belongs, and visited Nikko mountains more than a dozen times in all seasons, even in the middle of winter with a lot of snow in the moutatineous area.
Spring with full of green can be alternative, but it is nothing like a autum color Nikko if you wish to take a good picture to bring home. Nikko is so famous that it is quite easy to find a book of Nikko with a lot of pictures of temples and shrines, even in the USA. However, if you like outdoor sports or walking in the mountains, then you should try to climb up one of the Nikko mountains in autumn. When I was at local high school in this prefecture, I joined the moutaineering club and visited Nikko mountains so many times. I would like to share this experience of beautiful Nikko mountains with foreign visitors if he or she can spend a couple of days in the city of Nikko.
I hope he is now interested in the region more than ever.

All seasons - Nikko is best at the time when each season is in its best.
For festivals go October 17 or May 17&18 for the Procession of a Thousand Warriors which celebrates Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Shogun of the Edo Period.
Don't go on the weekends particularly in Autumn and Cherry Blossom time. It will be very crowded. Go on a weekday. Many Japanese don't like to go in late March/early April because the cedar pollen content is high. If this doesn't bother you, go then to avoid the crowds.
