If you have painted it and not used a high heat paint, then that will have to come off. Otherwise, go and get some stove black and put that on there. If that gets on anything, it is pretty well ruined, so be careful.

There is high temp black stove paint that we use every 2 or 3 years.

If you use the stove all the time there's no need to keep it looking new, you simply can't. You can buy stove paint and blackening from "Ace Hardware" but, I was doing mine twice a year, in the Spring and in the Fall.

In the old days, they would shine the stove with blacking -- the recommendation was to do this EVERY day! I read about this in Mrs. Beeton's housekeeping book. I think she even had a recipe on how to make stove blacking.
However, some stoves are not meant to be treated with blacking (see article in reference -- the question isn't put in bold face type and might be hard to find).

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/pUEPI
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

Oiling it will keep it black and prevent rust.
