I only recommend a book once I know what other books the person I'm talking to has read and has liked the most. I have never recommended a book only because I loved that book

Try, "Jonathan Livingstone Seagull" if interested in philosophy, or "Tuesdays with Morrie" for emotional reading, or the recent one "The Kite Runner" by Khalid Hosseini(a story based in Afghanistan), or go for O Henry's short stories, recently I read "Catcher in the Rye" by J D Salinger, that was OK, go for Ruskin Bond's collection, if you want to revisit the sweet childhood days or if you have a lot of time at your disposal then do read "To kill a mocking bird" by Harper Lee.

It's difficult to advise when one doesn't know ones taste. However there is a book I read recently which is aimed at readers 9 to 90 and I found very enjoyable."Visitors" by bob Chapman. It's on Amazon. It's about a small boy looking for his granddad. he's got an auntie who is as mad as a hatter and she helps him.
