Wow, interesting question. Magic built WotC into a gaming juggernaut, led in part to the demise of TSR (and it's purchase by WotC) and launched an entire new genre of games. Obviously, things have changed a great deal. These days even the smallest expansion receives more testing than the entire game did before it's release. Many of the original assumptions made by Garfield turned out to be wrong, even before the release of Unlimited it was obvious players would obtain far more cards than he had anticipated. Over the years the power level of cards and speed of play has fluctuated, with the general trend being towards slower play, until it gets to be too slow to be fun, whereupon the designers put some speed back into the game until it gets to fast and so on.

Wizards has certainly improved their release methods from the days of Legends or Fallen Empires. Today, no store is going to go out of business because they got far more product than they expected, but no set is going to disappear in a week or two either.

When Magic first appeared on the market, it's real competition was RPG's and boardgames. Today, it faces not only the challenge of it's own numerous offspring, but a growing body of internet games and has pushed into the mainstream enough to fight for entertainment dollars with video games, etc.

It never ceases to amaze me that the designers have managed to keep the game reasonably fresh and interesting for so long. I've been playing on and off since Unlimited and I never expected anyone to still be playing in 2006. And it shows no sign of stopping. Simply amazing.

What is there to say? The original core sets were much different than what we have today. Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, and Revised were all original cards. 5th and beyond are what we think of as a core set today. Today we have a few cards that are in every base set, like basic lands, and basic cards from a number of different sets. This core set maybe different in a number of ways. Mainly because no one is sure if they will reprint Birds of Paradise or if they will stick with Utopia Tree. Also, Wizards of The Coast has said they will not be reprint the Urza lands in 10th. With the success of the Painlands in 9th and the Shocklands of Ravnica its sort of a given that either of those series will be printed in 10th. But the slot for a colorless mana making land is empty. The most popular suspects for this slot are Temple of The False God and Cloudpost. I think Mirrodin's Core could make it in. Also, there's been a great deal of speculation about what the common and uncommon counter spells will be. Alot of people want Hinder to be reprinted and though its unlikely Counterspell as well.

inhabitants growth is something that Doomsday enthusiasts have been speaking approximately for years. It replaced into as quickly as believed that the Human inhabitants would desire to no longer exceed 4 billion because of the fact there does no longer be sufficient room on the earth for each individual to stay and nevertheless have the flexibility to eat or maybe breath. at present the inhabitants is around the 6 billion mark and that i for you will nevertheless breath and there continues to be foodstuff. in actuality there is feilds that are being left fallow for the subsequent 12 months or 2 so a larger high quality of foodstuff could be produced. We as a spiecis have the flexibility to think of and plan for destiny events. No different animal has that ability or a minimum of to the quantity that we've. A squirle to illustrate isn't storing nuts because of the fact it knows iciness is coming and has to ascertain it has adequate for the full iciness, like a nut an afternoon. It shops foodstuff because of the fact it incredibly is programed into it incredibly is DNA and instincts. i've got at present examine comments, no longer by using a single "scientist" yet ones that have been printed by using a super team that incredibly incredibly researched the situation and got here up with the type that if we don't advance our contemporary foodstuff, housing and easy medical comprehend-how, that the Human inhabitants can attain approximately 12 billion previously we attain severe issues. So it takes us approximately 10 years to advance by using 1000000000 and that may no longer counting the actuality that the international inhabitants is incredibly ideal heavy this skill that there are alot greater previous human beings than youthful ones. incredibly there will be issues that pop up, no one will see them coming and that they are going to be ultimately delt with. we can proceed to advance as a human beings and our inhabitants will advance to boot.

Magic the Gathering revolutionized the game industry. While some people claim it killed the role playing aspect of the adventure games industry, RPG developers were killing it themselves. It successfully filled a niche that no one knew was there, and created a whole new genre of gaming.
