In the past, I have made it short and sweet. I will be resigning to take another job elsewhere. My last day will be such and such a date. Explain that you appreciated the opportunity you were given and have learned a lot from your time here. You've made friends here who you will never forget and really valued your time there. Don't lie, but you also want to butter up the folks you are leaving, because you don't want to burn any bridges. You never know when you might want to come back in the same or different capacity. You also want a recommendation for later on. But basically, just give the facts. Never, never write anything bad in a letter of recommendation. Vindictiveness is unbecoming.

People leave jobs all the time. It is usually a bittersweet thing and people are used to this occurring (although it always leave uncertainty for a lot of your co-workers).

I would like to tender my resignation from Joe Bloggs Ltd effective 1 month from the above date. It is with some little regret that I do this as I have enjoyed my time here. However we must all strive to move ahead in our chosen work and I thank you for your trust in me over the past 18 months. Yours etc

my favorite has always been "Fuc* you I quit!! I'm guessing you don't really want to go with that though, otherwise you wouldn't be asking. I suggest something along the lines of "Even though I have enjoyed my work experience here, I need to move on." Either to another position, or a whole other state. Just be respectful. You might even get a letter of recommendation.

Keep it short and to the point. Always be polite - you never know when you may need a reference, or if you may do business in the future.
