Depends on how it's slow.
The slowest major part of a computer is the hard drive. But changing that won't generally provide significant improvement. Most hard drives people have are 7200 RPM drives... These are "standard". Western Digital Raptor hard drives run at 10,000 RPM which will mean they perform faster than an "average" hard drive but they tend to cost $150-250 for a relatively small drive. And overall, the performance increase would be like going from 60 to 65 miles per hour on the highway - it's faster... but in the grand scheme of things, that saves you all of 5 minutes on your 60 mile trip.
The processor can be a major factor in performance. But there are numerous types of processors and you can't just go out and buy the fastest one available. It depends what kind of system board you have as to how fast you can get. You didn't post that information, so I can't tell you. But in general, most of the time, a processor upgrade does relatively little good. Like having a car that can do 100, but most of the time, driving sidestreets and never topping 40.
RAM is the BIGGEST single factor in your computers performance. Now you didn't post how much you have, so how much you should add and even how much you CAN add isn't clear. Many computer makers sold XP computers with 256 MB of RAM as a "value" PC. Lets say you have a big family - you and your spouse and 6 kids. RAM is like having a big car vs. a small car. The more RAM, the bigger the car, the more people you can take to grandma's house for the holiday. If you have a small car, you can't (easily) fit 8 people in it - so it takes you MUCH longer to get everyone from your house to grandma's house since you'll have to make at least two trips. On the other hand, if you have lots of RAM (a big car), you can bring everyone in one trip. MAJOR time savings.
You can also check your PC for adware/spyware/malware... that could certainly slow you down. In addition, you can run a defrag on your hard drive - but that really is something few people can tell the difference on - a defraged hard drive vs. a non defraged drive will perform faster, but the improvement will likely not be noticeable to you.

More ram, more better hard drive space with higher RPM, and a better processor. This definitly will have a great boost on your computer or laptop.
