Large banks need teams of highly trained economists. And they do a lot more than economic forecasting (which is very important) - they also do asset/liability management, portfolio hedging, risk management, treasury functions, etc. Banks hire lots of Economics PhD's and they're a very valuable resource (everyone listens to them & their forecasts). By banks I mean both commercials banks and investment banks.
