Why is it generally acceptable for one black person to use the "n" word with another black person, but completely unacceptable and racist for a white person to? I personally think it shouldn't be used at all, I just don't understand why it is O.K. for some people to use and not others...

also, why do some people take offense to being called "black" as opposed to African American? i don't think anyone is offended when they're called "white.." neither really make sense because skin is neither black nor white... but i guess that's what stereotypes do...

I get called a "*****" all the time by my Black Boy Friend.
But He goes red when I say "****-r".

THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. (but not for everyone).
Some blacks don't like either.
Some blacks don't like "blacks"
Some blacks don't like "African American" since some have NO african ancestry at all. Like Dark Mezzo Americans.

Maybe we should give up racial definitions all together! Pretty soon everyone will be a mutt anyway. Hope my kids are.

Earlier in this century America was divided by Irish, Swedes, Polacks (Polish, but using antiquated term to make point), Norwegians, and of course those good old Anglos.

Now we just say "white".

Pretty soon we will either all be "N-" or no one will be a "N-"/

Thats the modern world!

(ADD:) HEY! looks like Yahoo! doesn't allow N_GGA spelling either! cheeky b-tards!

I'm black and I've never understood the usage of it N word either. I think it should be omitted from music completely, that's where the problem comes in. I'm seeing a lot of white folks buying rap music, if the N word is in the lyric, why in the hell would they not sing it? Understandable, but still very wrong. I don't go up to my friends and say, "Hey, N! How's it going?" I just won't do it, and I don't appreciate when they say that to me. I jokingly used it around my mom, and I was pretty certain I was not going to survive. I can't understand why we fought so hard for freedom and freedom from such word and now it's in the daily language. What the f&ck?

I would guess for the same reason it is ok for you to say a member of your family is lazy or stupid but if any one else says it then it is like fighting words. It is not really ok but people do not cause so much of a disturbance when you call your own something bad as they do when an outsider does. I am white and when I was younger I went to a mainly black school and at that time my friends who were black would call me the n word as i would call them the same as i was not an outsider i was like family it was ok. Yet now that i am older i do not believe it is ok for anyone same race or not to say racial slurs. Some things do change with age i guess.

It is not acceptable due to the origin of the word - Since this country started people of African descent have been referred to as the N word - it is derogatory, it is meant to put you down and make you feel inferior, and it worked. There is no other word in the english language that a caucasian can us when talking to a black person that is worst.

The reason people of African descent started to use the word in referring to one another is to take the stigma from it. For the most part if any caucasian uses the word when talking to a blackperson even if the black person does not say anything THEY DO NOT LIKE IT!! But to constantly tell them to stop gives the word power.

YGGDRASIL MITHOS SYMPHONIA - sorry to but in - I'm not sure what a Dark Mezzo American is but if he/she is considered black he is of African descent -- there are only 3 races Caucasian, ******* and Mongoloid - his race is ******* and Negroids are all of Afriacan descent - but his ethnic group could be anything

Well, i am black, and i don't really use that word. and when i do, i use it on anybody, if they are my friend, we all call each other that when we are just playing around or whatever. and i have friends that are white, mexican, indian, all of that, and when we are together and playing around it is fine, i think it depends on the person and the situation. It isn't just the color of thier skin, bcuz me personally, i don't care what color a person is, if they call me a "n" and i find that they are meaning it in a bad or insulting way, i will get pissed off at them.

there is no reason. the n word is a botched version of neghar, which means black. so when you say the n word your saying black. anyone can tell how it is used by the way is it said. if its an insult it is said with have, if its not is it said playfully, like its use as a greeting. i use it as a greeting with old friends in my home town and its always understood as playful greeting. just remember, words are arbetrary, that is, they have the meanings that we give them, and its on an individual level..

I agree but it's just like any other race calling a member of their own race by a derogatory term

It could be racist....most of the time, they use it to define that that person is *****......but, as much as possible...do not say it much, especially when with black people
