There are new viruses being embedded into graphics. There are NOT many and none are widespread... yet. BUT, it is possible to embed viral code into a graphic. It's much more likely that a virus or trojan or backdoor program was obtained through email or visiting a website than in a graphic file.
I would suggest downloading Windows Defender or AntiSpyware (whatever Microsoft is calling it this week). Also, download Ewido and get the latest signature files. Scan your PC. If you don't want to go through all that, then simply go to http://www.trojanscan.com and scan your PC online. One or more of those should tell you if there is a problem on your PC.

short short answer yes it is possible to send malware in a gif. however if your system has current updates from your O/s manufacture (microsoft.com for winXP etc) then you are reasonably protected, however for total piece of mind go to www.trendmicro.com and download the pc-cillin internet security 30day trial, then buy the licence to run it for a year after trial.
this is the best malware suite on the market.
you should also run the online scan at housecall.trendmicro.com available for both apple Mac and windows based systems.

good luck and stop downloading from unknown sources. and don't open anyemail attachments that you are not expecting from a trusted friend/ source.

hope this advice helps.

viruses duplicate and copy themselves onto your hard drive and what not. spyware is what allows people to see what you are doing on your computer..it can take photos of your screen and allow people to see what sites you are looking at. spyware can be downloaded when you visit a certain sites and in many other ways. it is likely that spyware was downloaded on your computer. 91% of computers have spyware downloaded onto them. there are programs that can delete it though. you could probably get something from download.com. good luck!

At artwork I have XP OS. It got here with a capture application suggested as "MySnap" Do a glance for and word once you've that. a lot of human beings weren't conscious it exists. once you've it, that is elementary to apply. bypass to the position you opt for to "take a image". Then open MySnap. even as the window comes up click on the "capture" menu, then "Any section". Use the cursor to "draw" a container around the component to the window/screeb you opt for a image of, and click. it provides you with the alternative to replica (to previous somehwer) or save the image. It can be done. What you need to do is get your self a spysweep. Run it and it will pull everything out. And put up shields to prevent it from happening again.
