Illustrator Thomas Nast, who worked for Harpers Magazine from 1860-1880, built on the already Americanized versions of Santa Claus created by Washington Irving and Clement Clarke Moore, arbitrarily choose the North Pole as the location of Santa's Toy workshop, which is in keeping with Santa's original Dutch/Finnish (Lapland) roots. Children began to ask as to where Santa lived when he was not working on presents? The answer eventually given was that he just lived where his workshop was, which just so hapened to be in a place known for reaindeer habitation.
