A Cadillac XLR and a Mercedes SL65 AMG is like comparing apples to oranges. The first thing that stands out is the price. The Mercedes is around three times the amount of a Cadillac. The second thing is power. While GM would like to make the XLR like a Corvette Z06, it simply fails. Whether you are talking about the Cadillac XLR (comes with a 4.6 Litre V-8 pushing 320 BHP) or the XLR-V (comes with a supercharged 4.4 Litre V-8 pushing 443 BHP) GM fails to make a "luxury Corvette" simply because of the performance differences. The new Cadillacs produce no where near the 505 BHP that the Z06 pushes with it's 6.0 Litre V-8. The Mercedes SL65 comes with a twin-turbo V-12 that pushes 612 BHP. The XLR has a longer wheel base compared to the SL65 which will allow for a smoother ride. The XLR would be better compared with a Mercedes SL500 and not the SL65 in which AMG has gotten a hold of and made it into a supercar. I don't know your prefrences for comfort vs performance. I personally would prefer the SL65 only because I would be buying the car for the performance aspects as opposed to the "luxury ride" aspects. Don't get me wrong, the SL has it's luxury points, but Cadillac has a smoother ride and is specifically a "luxury sports car" while the SL65 is a race inspired supercar that is more appropriately compared to a Ferrari, Porsche, or a Lamborghini. So if you're buying the car for performance buy the SL65 AMG, but if you're buying the car for the "luxury ride" buy the XLR.

if price is not an issue, the SL for sure. The XLR is a just a luxury version of the Corvette. it even has the tell-tale pipes coming out the back in the middle..like the Vette. it rides like the Vette, the sits like the Vette, it has the same warranty as the Vette, and it is $20-30K more expensive. seems a bit suspect to me, hey? The SL on the other hand is German. MB's are the true high-performance luxury automobile. combining fit and finish with performance and endurance. you hear stories of mechanical nightmares of former MB owners and all i can say to that is "you do not know how to maintain your vehicle". it is NOT a honda. the upkeep will cost you more if you drive it and abuse it like a honda. i have a friend who has as a 1985 450SL with over 500K miles on it... the dealer he takes it to for service issues him a ML s.u.v. as a loaner for whatever the service; oil change, detailing, even bloody windsheild wipers! THAT is service you can't beat. you think you'd get an Escalade to drive if your XLR went into the shop? think again.

bottom line: Mercedes has the better product, the better performance, the better service and the better resale (check the Blue Book, mate!) XLR is a Corvette with a woodgrain interior and a square sheet-metal body sans the fibre glass.

good luck in your purchase!

Mercedes. There is no comparison between an SL65 and an XLR.

Even the very well to do don't drive Mercedes anymore, they're in BMWs and Rolls Royces. But if you want a luxo-roadster the XLR is a good buy
