What can be done to change the discriminatory stereotypes of Muslims?

It puts people at risk for hate crimes, discrimination, violence, segregation and harassment. It limits mobility and personal freedom. What can be done to improve conditions for people?

The Muslims must take it upon themselves to improve their condition. They should do their best to portray themselves in a better light, and should increase efforts to get the general public to understand them better. Education and awareness are important and vital in maintaining a stable life for so may young Muslims out there.

I just hope people will start to realise that all Muslims are not terrorists, and all terrorists are not Muslims.

They are doing it to themselves. I am very white and very christian and very American and I really wish all the Muslims could live at peace with themselves. I wish they could all go to school, be educated, have food in their home and live a happy life. That is what I wish for. To see and hear that they want me dead saddens me. They hate the Jews because they hate themselves. They hate me because they hate themselves. I do not hate them and only wish the best for them. It is time to grow up and join the 21st century no matter what they say. I liken it to how the Americas (North and South) where taken over by the techologilaclly advanced explorers of Europe. the north american indians took it in the chin and they are now gone but have assymilated into the modern world. Sad for them but changes do take place. Man kind IS advancing and for the Muslim world to hang onto the 14th century is a lost cause. Christian and Jews all have there downsides but all of us worship the same God which is makes all this tension crazy. China, Japan, S.Korea are all on board with modern times. Europe and US and Canada all on board. This is not a religious thing but a time of growing up. I could care less what religion anyone is or what color thier skin is. The sooner the middle east realizes this is one world and gets on board the better it will be for everyone.

To answer your question the Muslim mentality has to grow up. The woman HAVE to be treated as EQUALS. They have to stop their hatred towards each other, towards themselves, and towards others. Until that happens the Muslim world will Always be looked down upon like it is today. I do not hear any Muslims standing up for what is right with a clear and loud voice. Only mumblings and finger pointing. I do not see any Muslims with Balls enough to want to take their people into the 21 or 22 century. To me the people are wonderful but the culture is weak and cowardly.

One word: education

It is the LACK of education that pushed the individuals into those "reading schools" which teaches nothing but the teacher's interpretation of Koran and nothing else. It's widely known that these are the earliest steps into brainwashing children into martyrs. And it's self-perpetuating.

Think of it this way: the extremists consider all advances (such as TV, computer, etc.) in information age as Western vices that much be shunned. In a way, they are correct, as they show the world for what it REALLY is, instead of how the extremists paint it to be. Thus, all such advances are banned.

I personally think that what needs to be done is create the cheapest radio one can create. You see those hand-cranked radios that can pick up AM/FM broadcasts? We need to create a LAPTOP or TV that can be run like that. THEN we can drop those in every mountain village and such, dozens and dozens, so everybody can have one. They will air appropriate shows, including religious ;shows, plus practical stuff like irrigation, sanitation, health, basic math, basic language, and other skills. TV schooling, basically. The extremists can probably convince the primitive folks that these are evil magic or and must be destroyed, but soon people will realize that these can only help, and slowly learn that there are two sides to every story.

Skyler f hit the point. Its partly the Western media that is to blame. They do somehow make Muslims look bad. Although I think its aggreeable that not all Muslims are terrorist, but yet all terrorists are Muslims.

There is little or no Democracy in the Arab world, and the Arab leaders don't engage in the right language of dialouge with Israel. And they did little to prevent the US invasion of Iraq, which is nothing but a catastrophe.

Why stop at just Muslims? What can be done to change the discriminatory stereotypes of Blacks, Hispanics, Gays, Jews and yes--Muslims.
It doesn't matter what we do to try to change the image to squash the stereotype, there's always going to be someone who harbors that hatred. And all that hatred is is a camoflague for fear.

unfortunately since 911 the non muslims think it's because of the muslim religion that caused that devestation which it didnt but they were taught wrong and people are still teaching it wrong to them. muslims have tried to tell them what their religion is.. people dont listen they believe what they wanna believe. i try to talk with muslims and make conversation so they know some americans are ok and know better than what people have said of them. my boyfriend is muslim and so are the people i work for. they are all great people.
