Mostly it's a reflection of low self-esteem. And I guess they think if they tell us often enough, and loudly enough, we'll believe them.
Toughness is a state of mind. Courage is in actions. Telling me about how tough you are doesn't make it so. My experience is a barking dog has no bite. The toughest, smartest people I have ever known rarely opened their mouths, even then saying only what was necessary.. or true.

No, I have seen and read quite a few people's answers here that would lead me to believe they are not trying to be "hardcore" at all. I like to answer questions - even yours, no need to be a thug (see the origins of Thugee), a gangster (see what happened to Al Capone?), a pimp (parasite), or a "player" (I've had fine relationships with females, thanks).
All this behaviour is just a subsection in our society, successfully SOLD to young people in the form of Rap music (or movies) of all races for ca$h, without the least thought of its negative impacts. While you find it funny, I think it's a lot of young people looking for identity in the wrong places.

My identify does not have any definitions so I did two of my peers: Annie: A distinctive bin that comprises used condoms, typically from people who find themselves pain from AIDS. It has extra just lately come to be a slang time period for anybody who's abnormally promiscuous. Zoe: A woman named after a red hippo, with a blue mohawk and sexual kisses. Who craves meatballs and potatoes on infrequent situations. (btw the ones are not the primary ones i simply proposal the ones had been humorous so i selected them)

Because weakness and meekness seem to be negative traits in our current society. People act and talk tough or hardcore in order to not appear to be victims. God has called us to meekness, or in other words, to humble ourselves before Him, because the 'meek' shall ultimately prove victorious. Plus, folks just want to fit in with their peer groups, and if their friends act all thugish, I guess they want to act the same way. How sad for them. They just new and smarter friends.

Maybe they say they are because you have already labeled them that way, and who's to say what is and is not "hardcore" anyway? How do you know they are only "trying" to be hardcore? Maybe they are. Oops i forgot I was supposed to just answer this right? My mistake =)

Because they want to feel in control of something. They want to be someone, but they're to lazy to suck it up and find a real career.
