I'm only 25 and I find myself starting to dislike the lyrics and images I'm hearing and seeing from rap. The other day I was listening to some Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy and other artists and started to wonder why I continue to listen to them rap about crack. Am I the only one? Am I just getting old?

Nah, you're not old. I'm 27 myself and I agree with you. Personally, I love hip hop. It's those candy rappers and the cookie-cutter MC's and the commercialized, bling-infested, money driven, half-naked video girl riddled BS impersonating hip hop that I can't stand. I definitely can't wait for that mess to die out. The fact is, mainstream media has been oversaturated by a lot of cookie-cutter rappers who spout nonsense because right now, they're the ones bringing their record companies the most money. Some, like me, might be old enough to remember this and some might not be, but back in the late 80's and early to mid 90's there was a lot of variety and substance to rap. You could turn on the radio and hear conscious (as in socially/politically conscious), gangsta, old-school, jazz-infused, comical and storytelling styles of rap back to back in one sitting (or one car trip). THAT is what's sorely lacking in mainstream rap right now - variety and substance. There's nothing to choose from anymore, kinda like going to McDonald's and seeing nothing but fries on the overhead menu.

Actually, there are still some hip hop artists out there who don't fit the "cookie-cutter" mold and have something to say, but unfortunately we rarely (if ever) see them in the mainstream media. A lot of the real hip hop artists have been put on the backburner or are stuck in the underground circuit because for the most part, good ol' Corporate America has flooded the market with whatever makes them the most money as opposed to actual talent, variety and substance.

It would be cool if some of the old-school artists would come out of retirement in force like the Justice League or the Superfriends and take back hip hop - lol. But I know it'll never happen. :( For now, we just have to wait for the virtual pendulum to swing in the other direction. All I can say is it's a good thing I was introduced to underground hip hop a few years ago. Otherwise, I'd still be sittin' here with Midnight Marauders on repeat, reminiscing about the good ol' days.

there are so many more genre of music out.
Listen to the writing of 70 and 80 's progressive rock bands, YES RUSH etc.... Listen to how much effort is put into their music and how it is not copied or boring and how original it is. Led Zeppelin.. these guys are old and dead but at 25 they ruled.
Robin Trower, Jeff Beck, Al Dimiola. They were unbelievable in their day 25 30 years ago. Listen and see how well they wrote and performed their craft. This Rap/Hip Hop has no ...depth. Nothing original and I can not figure WHY it is so popular. I am old but I still have my Marshall Stack in the Garage and I know how to play my guitar. Never learned how to scratch a record.

No, you're right. Older rap was good, but it's all been said. The fact that Tupac has been rehashed ten times instead of just being allowed to rest in peace is a sign of how much they're running out of crap.

Personally I think the rap and hiphop from the 80's and 90's was the best.

No you're not the only one. I find myself looking up old songs from the 90's even the 80's. Everything has pretty much been said. It's boring, repetive...etc. And PS..25 is not old. You're just mature for your age.

Don't worry. I'm 14 and I'm losing interest in rap. Well, at least today's rap. I like the older stuff.

Honey, you've just been listening to the wrong kind of rap. Not all of them rap about crack, ect.

Listen to some of Lyfe Jennings stuff, he's great and his songs have meanings.
