I always thought it was Pets Mart and the "smart" thing was just a cutesy pun ... but then I went and checked and saw this: http://www.petsmart.com/ps/main.jsp

Clearly, it's PET-SMART. By the coloring, and read the bar across the top of your window when the page loads. It says PetSmart.

Pets mart - like a special grocery store for animals. Thanks for the question because a lot of people have been wondering what it really is supposed to be.

They probably chose that name because of it's dual meaning--it's both a store for pets AND if you shop there you are being smart about shopping for your pet.
