I think it is a mixture of all three. Some people you are just destined to meet and therefore have a higher chance of picking those people as your friends or of them choosing you.

I choose my friends, but sometimes they choose me first and then I choose them back. I hope that makes sense.

In my past drugs used to choose my "friends", now recovery chooses my friends.

i choose my friends, friends can be sources of different influences it may be good or bad, so choose carefully..
