Technically, 'emo' isn't a style, but a type of music... but if you want to look like the sterotypical 'emo' you should have black hair with bangs that cover your eyes. Always wear black eyeliner. Converse shoes are good too. Don't smile. Wear think-rimmed glasses. Tight tight skinny jeans. Hoodies are a plus and studded bracelets and belts. Arm warmers, too. Listen to music like Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights, From First to Last, HelloGoodbye, Jimmy Eat World, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Get Up Kids (yes i know these band arent really 'emo' but some people think that anyways...)

Emo as in short for emotional... Usually describes a person who is highly emotional (not perhaps to outburst potentiail but to displays of emotion in dress, music choice, behavior. If your sad you let every one know how and why through eccentric and artist expression (most emo's are depressing)

Just don't try to become Emo. I mean...it's like trying to become, say, a Buddhist. Either you are believing in Buddhism, reincarnation and stuff or not, but if you just dress like an orange monk, you are a poser. Same for emo.

Steps:
Cut your hair to a very short bob-like hairstyle. Make the backside of the hair, way shorter than the front side. The long side has to be bangs, all stuck to one side. Spike up the back side, and pat down on the front side. Barrettes are nice too, if you're a girl, of course.(They've got good ones at Hot Topic and other stores like it. If you're a guy, dye your hair black or obnoxiously blonde, but preferably keep it spiked in the back and have your bangs cover one eye. You could also get your bangs/fringe dyed a lighter colour to the rest of your hair.


You have to have really tight shirts and pencil pants.(The girls dig it, fer sure.) You might want to even shop at girl stores, for the shirts and jeans. If you wear glasses, maybe (only if you want) you could switch to black framed glasses (this is awesome for both sexes), and might want to buy a pair of shoes (vans, converse, airwalk, etc.)


Band pins are also a good idea. Put them on your messenger bag or on the shirt/collar of your track jacket.


Boys can most definitely get away with wearing eyeliner. Most 'scene girls' see it as sexy, or something like that.


Girls should wear dark black eyeliner and lengthening black mascara with black or fluorescent pink or green eyeshadow. Don't pale up your skin - that just makes you look ill.


Customise and DIY! Rip jeans and cut skirts to make them shorter, sew band logos onto your bag, etc.


Don't be afraid to be different from anyone - including other emos and be always on the look out for original, one off items. Markets or second-hand shops (like Goodwill!) are the best way to find awesome things.

Cheesy 90's Pop is cool too! Backstreet Boys especially in their album Millennium. The songs Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely and I Want It That Way are definitely emo!

O-M-G E-M-O Why?! Emo's may dress cool but why would you want to be emo? They are depressed all the time, think everyone hates them and are very emotional. They are like "OMG, the store doesn't have my favorie kind of ice-cream.... I must cry and cut myself to feel better" If you want to DRESS emo, dye your hair black, and dye the part that covers your left eye red. And were black and lots of piercing.... Their music is cool, their dress is cool, their psychological condition may need some looking into...
