I think what your talking about is quick wit & shade. I myself being a queen had learned to throw shade from other queens. It's a way of cutting up & looking good in the process. This is an art form that gays pass on to each other on an unconcious level. This can really be learned by anyone. It's not a requirement for becoming a queen but comes with the territory. And it's not exclusive for people that put on a dress & wear make up. It's for people sly enough to catch on.There are many forms of shade. One of the best definitions of shade I ever heard was from the movie Paris is burning. A queen in the movie says ( I'm not telling you that your ugly, but I'm making you think that you is.) It's hard for me to explain exactly what I mean. ( Because it's not exclusively for gays or queens) It's just a common place to see it. So it's not necessarily cruel or petty than straight humor it's more about looking better or having the upper hand.

Some gay men, ok a lot of gay men, can be as you described. But I try not to categorize an entire population based on the acts of many.I think part of the reason gay men are so obnoxious in their humor is because they are loud about it.I am willing to bet that an equal number of heterosexual women behave in the same manner. They just do it with close friends rather then in a more public setting.
Some people are vicious and mean because of their own insecurities. One of my former friends was like this.He judged everyone and was always acting like nobody compared to him.He would insult people for every thing.Nothing was excluded. He would insult people who were a bit over weight and he would insult people who wore generic clothes and he would even insult people who did not make a lot of money. There were some things that he even would insult that I thought was beyond cruel. But privately he was a self conscious and self hating person.
So, you see, I think that behavior is not so much about sexuality and more then likely is a psychological problem.

In general gay men are very witty and can be cutting with it. I hate to make this generalization. It really has nothing to do with them being gay. Nor does it apply to all (and probably not even most) gay men.
But in what is usually called gay culture the men do have this type of wit. I believe it first developed as a defense mechanism. It was a way of fighting back against all the stuff they had to put up with.

I don't know why some gay men do that. I have seen it too. And they don't limit it to just other gay men either, as a lesbian I have caught the wrath of some. Even friends! LOL Trust me, I am the LAST person to throw a stereotype at anyone. But it looks to me as if some gay guys think they have a right to throw all that flamboyance around, just because they can. I went to a party in a gay bar awhile back, and the guy standing behind me was yelling obscenities over my shoulder. When I gave him a look to let him know I was displeased, he went BERZERK! He told me that if I didn't like the way he acted I could f***ing leave, this was a GAY bar afterall! DUH! That's kinda why I was there!

Yes. I think gay men are more perceptive about certain things than other guys tend to be (out of necessity or whatnot) and they can use that to hurt people.
Case in point, Ru Paul ad-libbing to Milton Berle at the 1993 Video Awards after he touched her breasts:
"So you used to wear gowns, but now you're wearing diapers."

I think straight humour can be cutting. I think it depends on who is saying the joke if their personality is bi.tchy whether they are gay or straight.

well, being straight, I tend to find all types of humor amazingly funny. Criticism that can have a humourous meaning to it will make anybody laugh... But then theres just plain rude and verbal assualt... And no matter who one is, theres always going to be a jerk somewhere. If it makes you laugh, then its cool.

Dude there are like 50 MILLION GAY MEN. It sounds like the ones you were arguing with were assh-les and I totally symathize because I hate it when people are disrespectful but you can't generalize all of them because of that.

From all that I even have seen in life, the respond is confident, we do have a much extra suitable humorousness....yet straights could be somewhat sharp additionally, and get excitement from wit in any variety, assuming they are not in basic terms stupid. (And, in my life, I even have met 2 stupid gays, yet I even have met one heck of loads of Gays). i'm uncertain related to the survival ingredient, as I even have in no way felt threatened....yet I even have been around loads of adult men who're sharp as a tack, surprising on the fly with barbs and wit. Come to think of of it, they have all been gay. Hmmmm. And confident, Gays look lots extra relaxed of their skins than many in the present day adult men..yet you will possibly desire to experience for the straigth guy..he's forged right into a tiny little container of habit with the help of all around him, and that has to get previous. He can't convey himself for worry of being categorized "gay." unhappy yet genuine.
