they are both important, but probably arms are more important with some exception..
generally speaking arms are responsible of propulsion much more than legs. Think about front crawl or backstroke, legs help to keep your body in a streamlined horizontal position, reducing the resistive drag, while the propulsive force is done by arms..
In short sprint races however the contribute of legs is not negligible, but still I feel you can say arms are more important.
In breaststroke the propulsion is mainly done by legs, since arms are in an uncomfortable positon and don't pull a lot..

In swimming they're both really important. But in some strokes the coaches look more at your legs and some look more at your arms . Take for example in the butterfly stroke they concentrate on your legs to see if your feet are together and moving at an equal tempo. in freestyle you should try more with your arms and kick really hard . Basically , in that stroke you just have to get your breathing routines correct .The same in backstroke . And in breaststroke you concentrate on both at the same time .You also must make the shape of your stroke correct.

Swimming is all about technique, if you don't have technique u'll look awful & splash through the water at snails pace (I realised this when I started swimming!) So both arms & legs are important- u need to do lots of drills 2 make them efficient.
eg.front crawl with one arm out in front & the other doing the stroke, touch hands, then use the other arm to do one stroke & swop...hard work

Legs and arms are both important whiling swimming. Although, legs are more powerful. If you were only to use your legs while swimming you would still move and go resonably fast. If you were to only use your arms you would go slower and your legs would hit the bottom of the pool.

Both are important. But it depends on what you are doing if you are going to weigh out the importance. As a freestyler, I know that legs are VERY important on sprints, but on distance events like my favorite the 500 :) , an efficent, long, and well-paced pull are key. I always keep the kick present though to help with rythm and align my body.
I am a technique swimmer.

I think they are both important, but I've never perfected my swimming technique. I use mostly my arms, my arms are just a lot stronger than my legs. But I know you should use both.

I swim and I need my arms way more than my legs... I hardly ever kick, and I still do really good. But my friend kicks a lot and hardly uses his arms and he does good to, so I guess it depends on the person.

both. But your "core" - your torso, is the most important. the rotating of your body is the most important because it is the biggest and requires to most strength. Concentrate on that!

Your legs they push threw the water and give you speed. Arms not so much really, but you still have to work them out.
