Which one should I pick? I get to choose any instrument I wish to rent and learn to play as a christmas present, and although I'm REALLY excited, I can't choose! I like all of them, and it's hard for me to select only one. I've heard flute is the easiest, but I don't simply wanna take the easy way out. I've heard violin was hard, but worth it, and useful in many types of bands, but I'm not as fond of the sound as I am of the other two. And as for bassoon, I ADORE the sound, and all bass instruments(I play bari sax), but I hear it's REALLY hard, and the other two have the advantage of being much more portable than the bassoon. Please help me pick! Lists of pros and cons would be great, as well as information about all three, because the wiki articles I read aren't as mentally filling as they could be. Thanks for your help!

I would say the flute or violin. I have played the flute for around 9 years, and it is not all that easy. There are more difficult instruments (french horn, for example) but it is a bit difficult in its own way. The flute takes a lot more air than most instruments and it is better if you have long fingers so you can reach the keys easier. However, they can be fairly expensive and they are horrible to clean and repair. If the smallest wire (and trust me, there are a lot of those pesky little things) is bent even slightly out of place it can mess up the sound badly. I don't know much about the violin, but I think that would probably be your best bet. Good luck with whatever you choose. Advice: I think you should really discuss this with a band directer or professional musician. They might be able to steer you better than we could.

Well, if you are thinking of music as a career, go with bassoon. Reason being is that most schools pay lots of money in scholarships for bassoon players since they are so rare. Also, if you are good, it is pretty easy to get a seat with a big orchestra playing bassoon. There are tons of violin and flute players out there so the competition is much harder for those.

I'd pick the flute, but that's just because I played it for years, and also piccolo. The bassoon is a beautiful instrument, but it takes a lot of windpower to play! I've never been fond of the violin, but I think that's just because a lot of people play it. My favorite thing about playing the flute was always the low notes, and the piccolo for the high notes. I've always loved the variety of notes and range in those two instruments. Hope that helps!

I can tell you from personal experience the violin is hard but very well worth it. i started playing when i was about 7 or 8 years old, and i am still playing today, and i am 18. its a challenging instrument to learn and you have to be very disciplined, but it is really worth it. it is a wonderful instrument. its also pretty impressive on most college applications to see you have played instruments, especially the violin or any other very hard instrument because of its difficulty and the effort you have put into learning how to play.
whatever you choose, have fun ^_~

I played the Bassoon and the Clarinet in school. They are both very fun. Go with the Bassoon. There are always too many flutes, too much competition. Plus they don't sound as good as a bassoon does. Bassoon isn't that hard, and it isn't hard to read bass clef either. The case for the bassoon is pretty large but definitely portable, I didn't have a problem with it. I wish I could have continued playin, it's just that you can't march with it, so I chose to continue playing the clarinet. With the bassoon you can make this funky weird little helicopter noise for fun too. BASSOON!!! Good luck, God Bless.

Talk to the band director--you might be surprised at what he'll let your kid start out playing. Clarinet or alto sax would be the simplest starting point to move on to more complicated reed instruments if the director thinks starting on bassoon is too much. Make sure you keep your son involved in all of this; it's him that needs to be happy here.
