my mom named me after this song and she later found out thast he was taking about a dog and i was just interested in hearing it i think it cam out in the early 80s maybe someones grandpa like the song r somethin and they heard it before anthony hamilton made and later version of it called charlene

There is a song called Brandy by a group called Lookingglass. I'm not real sure about the spelling of either the title or the band. Sounds like it could be what you're looking for but i don't think it was about a dog. That sounds more like "Me & You and a Dog Named Boo" by a band called Lobo. These songs were released in the same time frame and maybe mom's just a little confused. Happens as we get older. HA!HA! Hope it helps.
