Equality means giving everyone a fair shake- an equal opportunity. It means no one is left out in the cold, each person has the same opportunity to participate, to contribute, to receive the same benefits of society.

Equality is a variable metric in all societies.

Idealistically, a pure equality means everything is the same; homogeneousness. Same pay, same work, same everything. Ironically, pure equality negatively impacts 'fairness'; this is not good because it discourages competition and merit. It also says nothing of practicality of such a system.

In an ideal meritocracy, which everyone viscerally believes America is supposed to be (rather than an increasingly fascist republic having dwindling opportunity), 'equality' in it's thinnest sense could mean basic, minimum thresholds of support to allow people the opportunity of gaining merit.

Basic shelter, basic food, Basic utilities such as electricity, water, gas/heating are examples of this support.

I'd extend the definition to more aptly fit the modern life- the society in which we live- to include among those basic needs the support for receiving basic telephony, internet and transportation. I make this concession because modern society requires communication and transportation as a means to work and therefore gain merit. I personally believe it's mean to deprive people of these basic tools for survival in the modern "working" age.

Furthermore, this equality extends into the more abstract, such as the opportunity to be whatever person you want to be, regardless of age, gender, gender identification, sexual orientation, race, heritage, religion, nationality (from whence you came). In the most ideal level of equality in a society, the minimum level of tolerance would be raised to allow for flexibility on these issues and none of these things would negatively affect one's opportunity for gaining merit in society.

People argue that education should be a basic thing provided by society. In my opinion equal access to education should be a basic support since it is a tool for gaining merit. I want to note, that if our society really cared about people, it would take care of those basic needs and those needs alone would be enough for people to gain some merit- no real need for education. Education would then allow for greater merit but it would not be the only tool.

Instead, in this modern world, we focus on education. We do this because we have allowed education to be the ONLY tool to gain *access* to but not *guarantee* even those basic needs. This is wholly unacceptable to me. I don't think you can meet any of those needs on minimum wage unless you work three jobs. Forget about a family or ever paying a mortgage.

how did this come to be? maybe because we are in a silent economic 'war' with other countries- gotta stay on top. How to do that? By increasing the value of your workers (us) so that you can provide more expensive products and services and increase your country's output, which really only benefits the government and industry itself. It's this drive that really impinges on this ideal meritocracy definition of equality.

If you are middle class or lower, like 90%+ of America, you could say we have the equal opportunity to be slaves to this awful system that creates confusion, harms truth and the earth and our future. We all need to 'equally' demand reform by first dispelling our ignorance and making a roadmap to this ideal meritocracy.

ToDo: We need to significantly diminsh the digital divide and increase the trend of youth mentorship so that people will give a damn. The internet's 'wisdom of crowds' application such as Wikipedia will help turn our society into one which is more informed. This informed crowd will be an electronic democracy that will stimulate big changes, like maybe finally abolishing the electorate.

The word equality relates to such statements as 'all men are equal'. However, in both the US and UK, we do not use the word equality in the same way as do the French. Their concept of equality is much more literal. In the Anglo Saxon world we argue about the equality of the sexes, we talk about equal pay for men and women doing the same job of work; that sort of thing. We really do not accept equality in the true meaning of the word.

Different translations of the bible would suggest love and charity are synonmus. Examples found in.1st Corrinthians ch. 13 vs. 1-17 illustrate this many times. I would enjoy hearing from a scholar of the languages used in those past times to clarify my understanding. The story of the "World's Poorest Philanthropist", Gilbert "Harold" Ewing II (myself) is the reason for this querry. The " act of grace", or charity, reffered to in the news interview, has posited this question and I lack the sort of education to provide any insights of true value.
