.net is a TLD(Top Level Domain) in the URL of an website, most common is .com these are abbreviated terms. .NET is the identification for those compnay websites which business are related to networking type. for example if you are in domain selling business then your website name should be like www.yourcompany.net , on the other hand for the commercial porpose you would use .COM.
