It's either the fan or the magnatron. I suspect the magnatron. You can test it by putting something frozen in it and set for defrost. If the noise comes and goes, it's the mag. If the noise dosen't stop, it's the fan. If you don't have a defrost cycle, low will do the same thing. Microwave ovens are not DIY projects. Fan motor would be expensive. The magnatron prohibitive.
P.S. Most parts houses will not sell parts to you . There is a real safety issue (radiation leaks).

When I bought my first microwave it cost me $400, and lasted for 20+ years, before I gave it to Goodwill because it was just too darn big.
I replaced it with a model that was 1/3 of it's size and cost me $100. That microwave lasted almost 18 months until it just quit one day.
I replaced it with a slightly bigger model for $80, which has lasted for almost two years now, and is still going strong.
I think they don't put the care into their engineering of these products because the return on them is so low.
If your microwave breaks down, you can always replace it. Some of the cheapest microwaves out there cost less than $50.

BOOM.
No Im kiddin it wont go boom.
But the fan could be going out or turn tabel motor.
A few other things it could be
But if the unit is old and not installed in the wall or somewhere they are Very cheap to buy So I would consider that.
Also on the other hand if the unit heats up correct and seems to be working fine but just has a lound noise Then you could still use it. The unit will not blow up or cook you if your standing next to it.
Make sure the unit is clean inside and if it has a fan under it to remove smoke from a stove or something make sure the filters are clean.
I Wish you would of put how old and what kind the unit is that would of helped me alot But this is a general answer for you.
Goodluck.
PS- If you want to e-mail me with that info I would tell you more

Louder operating noise could be caused by something vibrating inside the unit. It could continue making this noise for quite some time. If it is still heating you can use it until it stops working. It would cost close to the price of a new one to have someone look at it since the price of new units has come way down. If you have someone come out to fix another appliance you might have them look at it while they are there but it is not worth having someone to come out to just look at the microwave.

If it's old it may have a few loose screws that are vibrating, making it sound louder than normal, that's probably all. Go over it with a Phillips screw driver and tighten all the screws.

Could be that the fan is clogged with dust, try cleaning it out (it's on the back of the unit) and hopefully that will do the trick.
