Whatever u do...play it before u buy it...take your time in testing
it to make sure you like the sound, that the strings are close to
the frets, it has to be easy to play, smooth. As far as $ goes...
you get what you pay for. If you find one you really like, but can't
afford it, put it on layaway...Cause it'll be worth waiting for the
perfect gituar. I bought one that looked nice..but wasn't worth a
crap to play. I didn't take my time to play it. Good Luck.

it's a subjective question, depending on what you can afford and what kind of electric you want...
Let's assume starter rock/pop:
Mexican Strat + Very Small Amp = $400 would be a very GOOD price. $500 would be average price. You can always find a cheaper guitar, but are more likely to have issues and no resale value at all.
