Men's clothing changed dramatically in the 18th century under the influence of people like Beau Brummell. Before that, men dressed very colourfully. Trousers were considered effete, tights and stockings being preferred. Brummel started the fashion for dark jackets and trousers which, with changing styles, lasted through the 19th century until our own day. Frilly white shirts gave way to plainer ones, and cravats and stocks to neckties, but what Brummell wore is basically the same as what a well dressed man wears today.
