personally, when I'm angry, and the other person isn't, it actaully calms me down, instead of making me more angry.

You can't really argue with nice. If you do, you just look and feel dumb. This is the reason it makes angry people even more angry, but eventually they either have to start fighting or just give up.

Good question! I think it's a way to not give them any reaction to confront! It's a way to stop that behavior before it gets out of hand! Also, I think if you have self esteem...you don't feel the need to rise to the "challenge" they're presenting you.

Yeah, it makes some people more angry because they're trying to get a reaction out of you.
Typical reactions, when confronted with an angry person, are to:
(A) be angry back;
(B) give in to whatever they want;
(C) shift their anger to someone else (pass the buck); or
(D) retreat, run away, leave, whatever.
To remain neutral, not give energy to their fit but neither give in, is the toughest. It can be interpreted as being nice, I guess. I'm usually smiling because everytime I see an angry person, I am reminded of the "vicious chihuahua dogs" that bark and growl and act all tough but, if they bit you, wouldn't cause any damage because they're just a stupid chihuahua!

most of us prefer to apply reverse psychology. I'd say it usually works - based on "behavior begets behavior" but of course, it's not going to work with every person.

If they are on the phone, take their number, then repeat it back to them and transpose two numbers on purpose. They will concentrate on correcting you and will cool the tirade. I don't know why, but it works.
