1995 toyota 4 runner, rebuilt engine with 67,000 mi. car losing coolant getting hot. took to shop they replaced thermostat, housing, couple of hoses. put back together then decided my water pump needed replacing. now got new timing belt water pump. now my heater only blows hot air in the back seat not front seat. why? does this have to do with the work that was done?

It sounds like they might have disconnected a vacuum hose that controls the direction of the heating system.
Tell them about it...

An 05 cooling system must be drained flushed and CLEANED. What you are describing sounds like a radiator that's not filled to the top when the engine is stone cold, the plastic coolant recovery bottle isn't filled 3/4 full and the AC-Delco radiator pressure cap should be replaced. If anyone has ever dumped discount store antifreeze that didn't say Dexcool on the bottle in the cooling system it absolutely will need to be drained, flushed and cleaned with GM powered acid cooling system cleaner. Any Chevrolet dealer will explain how quickly the cooling system will plug-up when any other antifreeze is mixed with the factory fill of Dexcool. Wish you had listed what the dash cooling system temperature reads or where the needle is after a five mile drive. Also wish we knew how high you have the heater control set. Do not use the air conditioner unless the windows are wet inside or it's hot out! Use the heater only. I own a 99 Pontiac 3.8 Grand Prix and the cooling system works perfect. I've listed every tip that's been done to our cooling system. I scanned some remarks from non-mechanics above who said you need a water-pump which you absolutely do not need! If the upper radiator hose is hot after a five mile drive you don't heed a water-pump. If you get heat inside the car you don't need a water pump. Shirley is another non-mechanic. It does absolutely no good to rod the radiator or clean it out without cleaning the entire cooling system.

Well.. Heater not working as in no heat means coolent is not flowing tho the heater core.. Check the thermis-stat..
Check fan is working. Don't know if it is or not then you will have to find the connector for the fan and fun power to the fan using the battery. Fan now powering up then replace fan..
If yes then the relay for the fan not working..
Also feel the rate-ator to see if it's hot when needle claims it's hot.
Also if the needle is saying it's hot but you can feel not real heat from the hoses or ect then maybe the sencer for the fan is bad..

two caution flags here :
1. the most common reason to replace the thermostat housing is when the mechanic breaks it
2. the very most likely reason that your heater doesn't work now is because the heater core is full of air not water and the cooling system is air locked from being improperly bled after the service.

get a 2nd opinion soon before you have a meltdown

My first guesses would be the heater core is shot , or the head gasket is blown.

But that would not explain the heat in the back seat but not in the front.

Maybe nothing. I once had a repair man get into my car and kick some connections loose under the dash and my heat did not work either though. Once I found the connection and hooked it back up it was fine. Maybe it's something simple!

If it is not blowing any air in the front you need a new front blower motor. If it is blowing cold air in the front you may need a heater core.

If you have rear heat, your heater core is fine. It has to be the blend door for the front ducting not working.

Blown head gasket, no doubt. Mechanic taking you for ride, an expensive one.
