I mean, I'll admit, when I was ten years old I was afraid of that store because I didn't know what goth/punk/"emo" was and there were a bunch of dark looking teenagers in there.
But now that I'm older, I love it. And I have a slightly preppy style. A lof of people seem to label that store as punk or goth, yet it's really for everyone. I've seen plenty of really preppy looking things in there, not to mention a variety of colors. Why do people instantly assume it's a goth/punk/emo only store?
A few weeks ago, my friend mentioned it, and then I mentioned how I loved Hot Topic. Her response was, "sorry, but I don't really think you'd fit in." I was actually slightly offended. I don't have to dress a certain way or listen to certain music to like a store. In all honestly, everyone can find something they like there.

Well, you're wrong in thinking everyone is getting over it, because people really aren't.

Most teenagers are intially impressed once they discover it, but all in all, it's just a store in the mall. As for it being 'punk,' 'goth', 'emo', or 'preppy', I assure you, it is no such thing. They can carry merchandise that might be labeled as or considered to be 'punk/goth/emo/and so on, but really, it's just a capitalist business. Punks were big on DIY, look it up sometime. Most real goths and punks (not label-happy teenyboppers) do not shop there - they prefer the internet or thrift stores for their clothing needs, trust me on this one - but occasionally some do go in there. (I mean, where else are you going to find amusing skull-print bras or Spongebob notebook paper?) But don't fall into the trap of believing that shopping there makes you a punk, or a goth, or a prep, or an emo, or any other such designated subcultural flavor of the week. All it would make you in that case is a deluded consumer, which there are many of.
That having been said, enjoy your shopping.

I hate people like that.
Although I dont go there very much, i still have found a few things I like, like.. new cds, some hats and hoodies.
People probably assume its a goth/punk/emo store, because of the way it looks..the stuff there, the people working there..etc. The one close by to where I live, a lot of black people are shopping there now. So everyone is defiently allowed to shop there..
But the store probably was built to attact those types of people, whether you like that or not.

i used to shop there allot. sometimes people who label themselves as punk or goth think there superior to preps, but sometimes those people are just wanna bees.and sometimes preps try to be punk or goth but they're not. but it doesn't
really matter if u like it go 4 it. all i know is too many people started trying to be punk and it kinda ruined it for some of us older people who really know what punk is about. now its so commercial . that makes it phony and stale now.we've just gotta be our selves dammit!!! i think the young kids took on the style of trying to be punk/goth to be cool. ha ha

This may be true, but due to the population of emo's arising, the fashion pole has dropped significantly for those who regularly bought clothes there; people like myself.
They go off of what's the new fashion, and in these recent months, it's the skinny boy, which is to those who have a good fashion sense, poor.
People like myself are angered at the emo's for taking the gothic dress and transforming it to where th guys are wearing girls pants, and therefore I have to go online and pay extra shipping and handling from hottopic.com, or I am forced to go to Wal-Mart.
End of rant.
