According to Consumer Reports:
Best upright is Kenmore Progressive with Direct Drive 35922(from Sears) for about $300
Best cannister is Electrolux Oxygen 3 EL7020A for about $500
For the best deal, I recently purchased the fourth best upright...the Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra 4870 for about $150
For the other answers: The best Dyson (the DC15) is sixth best @ $500. The best Oreck (the XL21-700) is the tenth best @ $700. From experience, Oreck is marginal at best and very loud.
