The air that lightning flashes through is mostly nitrogen, but in a form that plants can't use. Lightning "fixes" or converts some of this nitrogen into a mineral nutrient that plants need. But the nitrogen fixed by lightning is only a small share of that needed by the world's plant life. Microorganisms do most of this work

Lightning also helps maintain the global electrical circuit. This, according to the glossary of a National Academy of Sciences report on space weather, is "composed of phenomena that generate and dissipate electrical currents in Earth's atmosphere. The global electrical circuit includes regions of thunderclouds, which tend to drive current upward and charge the ionosphere positively, as well as fair-weather regions where the positive charge leaks back to the ground. Electrodynamic processes in the ionosphere and magnetosphere also influence the circuit."

Lighning creates ozone, but not enough to fill in the big hole. I t would probably take thousands of years to accumulate if it even works that way. i don't know. If you are struck by it, it is possible to be revived by cpr in case the heart stops, but there is usually some long term neurological damage involved. Sorry, no magical powers or heightened intelligence for people who have been struck. The human mind and body is electric, and we often respond to a coming storm by feeling energized. I think that that is beneficial. Just don't get too close.

the best effect I have ever seen of lightening was flying between london and melbourne. I am the worst flyer and whist everyone was asleep and dark in the cabin I was wide awake and looking out at an electical storm. It lit up the sky and was amazing but I couldnt share it with anyone because everyone was asleep and I was traveling alone... it was excellent!
